Saint Barnabas’ Church finds itself alive with opportunity and the prospects of creative change, which it sees as the special gifts of a God who says: “Behold, I make all things new.” At the same time, the parish remains firmly committed to its Anglican roots - with their doctrinal bases in Holy Scripture, the Catholic tradition of the Western Church, and the divine gift of reason - which provide it with its rich liturgy and worship life, as well as an empowerment of its laity of all ages to “be in ministry.”
Saint Barnabas’ Church is a small parish in which everyone is someone, a valued brother or sister in Christ, a person who is not defined by societal standards but by the infinite worth God has declared in the covenant of Holy Baptism. Thus, the parish is far more than a weekly assemblage; it is a warm and welcoming Christian fellowship which understands itself as “family.”
Saint Barnabas has instituted use of both contemporary and traditional worship resources, including an October commemoration of Saint Francis of Assisi, which includes, the “Blessing of the Animals” as an outdoor rite. Through Bible study and focused discussions, Saint Barnabas’ Parish is exploring what it means “to be in ministry” in this 21st Century. One immediate result of such exploration has been an overwhelmingly generous subscription of a parish goal: to assist an elderly Louisiana couple rebuild their Hurricane Katrina-destroyed home. The goal has been exceeded by almost 100%. Another result has been a visibly growing mutual trust and sense of partnership between the members and friends of the parish and their priest-in-charge, Fr. John Brndjar, appointed in March, 2006.
An active parish of the Episcopal Diocese of Bethlehem, Saint Barnabas’ Church is fortunate to be able to focus its mission and ministries locally, regionally, and world-wide as it shares the love of God. Saint Barnabas welcomes all persons, especially “seekers and searchers,” to experience its gratitude for all its yesterdays, its appreciation of today with its many God-given opportunities and challenges, and its commitment to follow where Christ leads as it develops and implements its vision of tomorrow.
